The Gate

The Gate is a large scale light-installation at the mouth of the Gandsfiord, located on mount Lifjell. It marks the transition from natural landscape to township along the entrance to Sandnes Municipality - whether you travel by car or boat.

The Gate is the most significant and the largest installation of Sandnes Municipality as an active partner of The European Capital of Culture, Stavanger2008.

The Gate is Sandnes' illuminated gateway in the Gandsfiord, consisting of strips of light illuminating mount Lifjells prominent topography. This installation is visible from Stavanger in the north along the west side of the Gandsfiord towards Sandnes. The Gate was launched on the 11th January 2008 and shall be in operation for the rest of the year.

Experience the Gate at different locations along the Gandsfiord. Discover how the Gate changes its expression continuously, depending on where you are, how you travel, and on the prevailing weather and light.  The best locations to enjoy the Gate are at the seaside on the opposite side of the fiord, e.g. at Mariero, Vaulen, Jåttåvågen and Frøystad Gård, and - please avoid places with much light.
